Akwa United head coach, Kennedy Boboye insists his side have turned the corner following a slow start to this season’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) campaign.
A disappoint 0-0 draw against city rivals, Dakkada FC was followed by a 0-1 defeat to Rangers International in Enugu on match day two.
On Saturday, the ‘Promise Keepers’ won their first game of the season, 2-1 against Abia Warriors with Ndifreke Effiong netting both goals in Uyo.
“The game against Abia Warriors was a tough one. I came up against my friend (Abia Warriors head coach), Imama Amapakabo who grew up with me in Port Harcourt,” Boboye told SPNAfricaNews. “Imama and I played for the same club (Sharks) and we also worked together in the national team (Nigeria’s U-23 team) as coaches.
“He was the head coach and I was the assistant and now we are coaching different teams. I led my team against his team on Saturday but it was a very tough game and my team won the match.”
Boboye added that Akwa United will now look to build on the success of Saturday go on a run which he believes will culminate in silverware at the end of the season.
“Our next game is against Kwara United in Illorin. Fans of Akwa United can expect that we are going to Illorin to go for our pound of flesh because the last time they came to Uyo, they defeated us.”
The gaffer concluded by reiterating his side’s ambitions in the season’s campaign.
“Naturally, we will take each game as it comes and assess what we do on a game by game basis.
“These are still early days but our ambition is to fight for the (title).
“By then time we get to he end of the season, we will either be in a position to win the title or get a continental position.”
