Rohr’s Super Eagles contract extension gets thumbs up

Former Nigerian assistant coach, Fatai Amoo has described as appropriate the contract renewal of Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr.

Rohr had his initial four-year contract, which was due to expire in June, extended by another two years by his employer, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with a mandate to qualify the team for the next World Cup and win the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Amoo said the Franco-German tactician impacted positively on Nigerian football in his first term and could even be asked to stay longer than the contract’s extension period.

“Sincerely, I think the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has done very well by renewing Gernot Rohr’s contract by two additional years.

“Rohr performed creditably well in his first four years in charge of Super Eagles, the influx of young talented players within and outside inside the team is a huge one.

“It’s just normal and proper to ask a coach who has been with the team for the past four years to continue with his work in form of contract extension or renewal.

“The contract renewal offers him a golden opportunity to surpass what he has achieved in the past.

“The NFF mandates on him to qualify the team for the World Cup and win the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are quite achievable.

“Rohr has already achieved one of the mandates by taking the team to the last Fifa World Cup in Russia.

“He will simply return to his armoury to fetch the most potent weapon to execute the task with much ease and finesse.

“However, the second mandate of winning the next AFCON looks a bit tough even though the last AFCON in Egypt he won bronze.

“Again winning the next AFCON may be tough but it is still achievable with the right material and preparations.

“Rohr has shown himself to be an ambitious and serious coach even if nobody gave him the mandate to win the AFCON I guess that should be his personal target.

“NFF has been good and magnanimous to him and I want to believe he will want to reward their confidence and trust handsomely,” said the former 3SC and Sunshine Stars gaffer.

The two-year contract extension will see Rohr covers campaigns for the next AFCON in Cameroun and World Cup in Qatar.
