Atlético Madrid have announced that that Portuguese star, Joao Félix picked up an injury in training.
Félix was injured in training on Monday (May 25) after suffering what was described as a “low-grade medial collateral ligament sprain of the left knee” by the club’s official media channels.
Spanish daily, Marca is reporting that Felix will be out of action for about three weeks – meaning there’s a chance he might not miss any games for Atleti. Spain’s top flight league, the Liga Santander, is not expected to recommence before June 14.
Félix has struggled to impose himself on the Atleti set-up since arriving from Benfica for 126m Euros (£113m) in July 2019.
At the time, it was the fifth most expensive transfer in history.
The Portuguese’s latest setback represents the third injury he has suffered in his first season at A Rojiblanco.
His first was a sprained ankle which he sustained in a Liga Santander fixture against Valencia that saw him miss four league games and two in the UEFA Champions League.
He then suffered a muscular injury shortly before the Madrid derby which kept him out of action for three league games.
He also sat out Atletico’s UEFA Champions League first leg, round of 16 tie against Liverpool as a result.
Félix has participated in 28 games this season for Atleti, in all competitions.
