Basilashvili charged with assaulting his ex-wife

Georgian tennis star Nikoloz Basilashvili, 28, has been charged with assaulting his ex-wife, Neka Dorokashvili. Basilashvili’s lawyer confirmed the charges.
The 27th player in the world however denies the allegations that he attacked Neka in front of their five-year-old son.
He has since been released on 100,000 lari (£25,750) bail with a preliminary court hearing scheduled for July 16.
If he is found guilty, Basilashvili could spend up to three years in prison.
Basilashvili married his ex-wife in 2013. They share a son, Lucas, who was born in 2015.
The tennis ace reached as high as No 16 in the world rankings, and has also won three ATP titles.
It is believed Basilashvili has earned approximately £4.5million in prize money during his career, and remains the most successful tennis player in Georgia’s history as an independent nation.
The Georgian Tennis Federation issued a statement.
‘First of all, we would like to state that Georgian Tennis Federation has always condemned any form of violence,’ the statement said.
‘The incident involving Nikoloz Basilashvili is currently under police investigation and GFT will refrain from either announcing its position on the matter or making any comments until such investigation is completed.’
