Bayern Munich’s Oliver Khan slams UEFA over Man City’s FFP reprieve

Bayern Munich legend, Oliver Kahn has slammed UEFA for failing to keep Manchester City out of European competition after the Citizens successfully overturned a two-year ban slapped on them by the governing body of European football. The senior Bayern Munich executive also dismissed insinuations made by the City manager, Pep Guardiola that there is an agenda” against the club.

The former Bayern Munich goalkeeper added that the idea is to get UEFA to become a lot more strict with clubs they suspect are not complying with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

City successfully overturned a two-year ban from European competitions following allegations that they were guilty of “serious breaches” of Financial Fair Play. The Court of Arbitration for Sport cancelled the punishment last month due to a lack of evidence, though it accepted that City did not cooperate properly with UEFA’s investigation.

The court ruling has not kept rival clubs and officials from criticising City’s financial approach, which they believe makes it harder to create a level playing field between teams.

Kahn, the former Bayern goalkeeper who joined the board in January and will take over as its chief executive next year, said football needs to take the regulations “more seriously”.
“I don’t know the situation exactly now in Man City or PSG or other clubs but I think we should take this FFP in the future more seriously,” Kahn said.
“We need a clear structure and serious FFP so that we get more balanced competition.
“If in the future you only have the same clubs winning the Champions League or winning, for example, the Bundesliga or Premier League or other leagues, I think it’s getting a little bit boring.
“So, I think we should do everything to get really strong FFP,” he noted.
