Bundesliga wrap: Bayern stay four points clear

Bayern Munich maintained a four-point lead in Germany’s Bundesliga on Saturday (May 23), with an exciting 5-2 victory over Eintract Frankfurt.

The Bavarians have now amassed 61 points from 27 games.

Bayern’s closest challengers, Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 at Wolfsburg thanks to goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Achraf Hakimi. Dortmund’s success at the Volkswagen Arena means they now have 57 points from 27 matches.

Reigning champions, Bayern, however looked to have destiny firmly in their hands with a classy – if at times nervy – win at the Allianz Arena. Thomas Muller starred in a one-sided first half, first providing a tremendous assist for Bayern’s opening goal, clinically dispatched by Leon Goretka, then netting himself four minutes before the break to make it 2-0.

Robert Lewandowski seemed to place the game’s result beyond question with a stunning header just seconds after the restart but two brilliantly headed goals by Frankfurt center-half Martin Hinteregger off Sebastian Rode deliveries had the hosts looking nervously over their shoulders.  Alphonso Davies struck soon after to give Bayern a two-goal cushion before Hinteregger put through his own goal to guarantee all three points to the hosts.

Kai Havertz continued to lead by example as a double from him inspired Bayer Leverkusen to a 3-1 win at Borussia Monchengladbach. Werder Bremen substantially improved their chances of avoiding the drop with a gutsy 1-0 win over Europa League-chasing Freiburg, at Schwarzwald-Stadion, with Leonardo Bittencourt netting the winner for Die Werderaner (The River Islanders) just before the 20-minute mark.

SC Padeborn and TSG Hoffeinheim drew 1-1 at the Benteler Arena in a contest of early goals as the hosts took the lead in the fourth minute through Robert Skov. Thomas Srbeny’s strike, five minutes later, restored parity for the hosts and ultimately, a share of the spoils.

Results:

Bayern Munich 5-2 Eintract Frankfurt

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Wolfsburg
Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-3 Bayern Levenrkusen
SC Paderborn 1-1 TSG Hoffenheim
Freiburg 0-1 Werder Bremen
