Bundesliga Wrap, Matchday 25 – Vulnerable Bayern draw against Leverkusen at the Allianz

By Sammy Wejinya

League leaders Bayern Munich added a point to their eight-point lead at the summit of the 2021-22 Bundesliga standings after they were held to a 1-1 draw by third-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Niklas Sule netted the opener for the Bavarians at Allianz Arena but an own goal from Thomas Muller ensured both teams shared the points.

The outcome keeps Leverkusen third on the log, but with 45 points and despite having 59 points and a nine-point lead ahead of the chasing pack, Bayern’s failure to leave with maximum points could haunt them as second-placed Borussia Dortmund have played a game less.

Dortmund’s visit to FSV Mainz 05 had to be called off due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Mainz 05 camp after 13 players and six staff members tested positive for the virus.

1899 Hoffenheim have ascended into the Champions League places after a 1-0 win over eighth-placed FC Köln.

Stefan Posch’s goal, a minute after the hourmark, was enough to send the visitors to fourth on the log with 43 points while Köln have amassed 36 points.

RasenBallsport Leipzig dropped out of the top four and two points behind Hoffenheim as they and SC Freiburg each dropped a place after playing out a one-all draw.

Angeliño’s 90th minute goal cancelled out Ermedin Demirovic’s goal on 38 minutes. Both teams have now registered 41 points this term.

Seventh-placed FC Union Berlin slipped to a 0-1 loss at 12th placed VfL Wolfsburg.

A 24th minute own goal from Taiwo Awoniyi helped Wolfsburg to 31 points this season while Union are seventh with 37 points.

10th placed Eintracht Frankfurt comfortably dispatched 16th placed Hertha BSC at Olympiastadion.

Ansgar Knauff, Tuta, Jesper Lindstrøm and Rafael Santos Borré all netted for Frankfurt who have now amassed 34 points while Davie Selke was on target for Hertha who are in the relegation/playoff spot with 23 points.

11th placed VfL Bochum saw off bottom placed Greuther Fürth 2-1.

Maxim Leitsch broke the deadlock in the 35th minute but Armel-Bella Kotchap scored at the wrong end on 64 minutes to equalise for Fürth but Anthony Losilla scored the winner seven minutes later to increase Bochum’s points tally to 31.

Daniel Caligiuri’s 50th minute goal helped FC Augsburg to a 1-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld on Friday.

Thanks to the win, Augsburg leapfrogged Bielefeld as they sit 14th with 26 points while Bielefeld are 15th with 25 points.

17th placed VfB Stuttgart boosted their survival hopes after coming from two goals down to record 3-2 win against 13th placed Borussia Möchengladbach.

Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram struck in the first half for Möchengladbach but comeback goals from Wataru Endo, Chris Führich and Sasa Kalajdzic took Stuttgart to within three points off the safe zone as they have now amassed 22 points while Möchengladbach are five points better with 27.
