Bayern Munich turned on the style to dismantle Fortuna Düsseldorf 5-0 and go ten points clear in Germany’s Bundesliga on Saturday (May 30).
The Bavarians came into the game in fine form, following a deserved win over Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Tuesday (May 26).
A Mathias Joergensen own goal on the quarter hour got the scoring underway for the hosts, with France international, Benjamin Pavard doing most of the good work.
Pavard got on the scoresheet in the 29th minute with a well-taken header before Robert Lewandowski made the points safe with a third, just before half time.
Lewandowski completed his brace five minutes after the break and speedster, Alphonso Davies netted the fifth for the champions-in-waiting in exhilarating style in the 52nd minute.
The Bavarians then took their foot off the gas, closing out the win at a canter but sending a statement of intent to the rest of the pack.
Hertha BSC moved to within four points of teams with European places, with a 2-0 win over Augsburg with goals from Javairo Dilrosun and Krzysztof Piatek. It was Piatek’s second in as many games.
TSG Hoffeinheim moved up to seventh with a hard-fought 1-0 win against struggling Mainz 05. Ihlas Bebou’s strike, two minutes before half time gave Hoffeinheim the win against the hosts. The win also sees Hoffenheim go level on points with sixth-placed Wolfsburg, who occupy the final European spot.
Wolfsburg could have closed the gap on fifth-placed Borussia Mönchengladbach to seven points but they lost 1-2 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Andre Silva put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute with a well-struck penalty but Kevin Mbabu equalized for the hosts on 58 minutes. Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamada then guaranteed maximum points for the visitors with the winner five minutes before the end.
Schalke’s atrocious form continued as they lost 0-1 to Werder Bremen at the VELTINS-Arena with Leonardo Bittencourt netting the winner just after the half hour.
On Friday, Bayer Leverkusen moved up to third with a 1-0 win a Freiburg. The in-form Kai Havertz netted the winner in the 54th minute before hobbling off with an injury 12 minutes later.
