Jadon Sancho netted a brilliant hat-trick for Borussia Dortmund as they closed the gap on leaders, Bayern Munich to seven points in Germany’s Bundesliga following a 6-1 victory over the bottom club, SC Paderborn on Sunday (May 31).
Dortmund, missing their injured Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland, looked lethargic and unimaginative in a first half of few clear-cut chances.
Sancho was however making his first start for Dortmund since the coronavirus enforced break and he made his mark with a well-taken brace after the break.
Dortmund took the lead in the 54th minute through Thorgan Hazard before Sancho got his first goal in the 57th minute as he finished brilliantly after latching onto Hazard’s cross from the left.
His celebration was symbolic as he revealed a “Justice for George Floyd” message on his undershirt.
Sancho netted his second on 74 minutes before completing his hat-trick on the stroke of full time.
Dortmund then completed a comprehensive victory with further goal scoring contributions from Achraf Hakimi and Marcel Schmelzer in extra time.
Dortmund have now amassed 60 points from 29 matches.
In the day’s other game, Borussia Mönchengladbach beat FC Union Berlin 4-1 to move up to third.
