COVID-19 lockdown tough on players – Ojo

Sunshine Stars goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo has described as unhelpful to the players the COVID-19 induced holidays.

Football activities in Nigeria and the world have been at standstill no thanks to the novel and rampaging coronavirus pandemic.

Ojo said the experience and reality have been simply tough even though the football communities are determined to see off the pandemic.

“The COVID-19 forced break has not been helpful to us footballers but there is nothing we can do but to abide by the reality and safety measures put out by the health authorities.

“It’s not really good for us especially on our career and will surely affect our performance in the league.

“Well, we take consolation in the fact that the coronavirus pandemic is worldwide not only in Nigeria,” said the former Akwa United shot-stopper.

Ojo said he is a bit lucky to have personal training equipment within the confine of his house to train and keep fit.

“I train on my own. I’m somehow lucky to have a spacious compound and training equipment.

“It helps me to do some form of training and keep fit but then it cannot be the same as normal training and competitive games.

“I do all those things just to keep fit and avoid match rustiness.

“I believe we will overcome this trying period and return back to the pitch to keep doing what we know how to do it.

“Of course, it’s truly tough on all the teams but I’m confident that Sunshine Stars will not be the worst off,” said the goaltender.

Sunshine Stars are ninth on the 20-team top-flight on 34 points 15 behind leaders, Plateau United and will make a road trip to Akwa United when the league resumes with Matchday 26 clash.

The management of the Owena Whales on Thursday reviewed the initial COVID-19 two-week break given to the side to approve an indefinite extension of the recess.
