Borussia Dortmund have announced the sacking of manager, Lucien Favre following the club’s humiliating 5-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Saturday (December 12).
The defeat represented Dortmund’s third successive home defeat and made Favre’s position at the club untenable. It is believed the team was to be officially informed of the decision during training on Sunday afternoon, with Favre’s previous assistant coach Edin Terzic will taking charge of the team against Werder Bremen.
Dortmund currently lie fifth in the Bundesliga table, on 19 points from their first 11 games. Following the disastrous performance against Stuttgart, Favre blamed his own tactics, telling Sky Sports Germany. “We always try to play small and small through narrow spaces and have a huge ball-loss rate. “If it works, it looks like nice football. But it rarely does. That requires too much skill.”
“A lot went wrong today,’ the 31-year-old continued.
“We didn’t play a good first half either, but we went into the break happy to be level at 1-1.”
Favre was appointed manager of Borussia Dortmund on May 22, 2018 and his contract was supposed to run until 30 June 2020.
During his debut season, he became the first-ever manager to remain unbeaten in his first 15 Bundesliga matches.
