Bayern Munich Hansi Flick has praised the efficiency of Borussia Moenchengladbach after Friday’s 3-2 defeat suffered by his team on Friday night (January 8).
Robert Lewandowski and Leon Goretzka netted inside the opening 27 minutes to give Bayern a commanding 2-0 lead but they were pegged back by the hosts who launched a stirring comeback.
Jonas Hofman netted twice before the break to level matters before Florian Neuhaus netted the winner in the second half.
“Gladbach were brutally efficient, they took advantage of three mistakes we made and scored three goals,” Flick said at full time. “We dominated the first 30 minutes. In the end, small details decided the game.
“We couldn’t come back after their third goal, but that’s part of football, sometimes you also lose games. It’s annoying and we’re very disappointed with the defeat.”
Flick added that Bayern’s approach and movement off the ball could have been better.
“When you see our game, it’s clear where we have problems, we have to do much better off the ball.
“Gladbach was very efficient against our defense. When you lead 2-0, you have to go back to Munich with three points. Simple mistakes were punished today.”
On his part, Moenchengladbach head coach Marco Rose said the win over the champions was well deserved.
“I’m proud. All in all, it was a well-deserved win,” he said. “We were suddenly 0-2 down without really being outplayed by Bayern.
“Our first goal was very important to us. It gave us strength and belief”
“A lot of what we set out to do worked out well today. We wanted to send Hoffi (Jonas Hofmann) to get in behind their defensive line, that worked out very well.
“Lars (Stindl) was instructed to fill the gaps, that’s his strength. I’m really happy for the boys.”
