Hamilton wins Spanish GP

Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton on Sunday claimed the Spanish GP to extend the lead at the top of the Drivers’ championship.
The six-time world champion masterfully shrugged off tyre concerns to seal a dominant victory ahead of Red Bell’s Max Verstappen and his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas who completed the podium places.
A week on from a surprise first defeat of the season, Mercedes had been fearful of the threat of Red Bull again in Barcelona – but pole-sitter Hamilton was in control from start to finish despite Verstappen’s admirable best efforts.
Verstappen can take solace from the fact he beat one of the Mercedes given their pace advantage, with Bottas made to rue a poor start to the race which saw him drop down to fourth after Turn One.
Verstappen therefore remains Hamilton’s closest challenger in the standings, although the six-time champion is now 37 points clear.
The win also means Hamilton has broken Michael Schumacher’s record of 155 F1 podiums, while he is also just three away from the German’s all-time victory record of 91.
He was understandably pleased with his victory in his post-race comments.
“I’m in a daze. That was amazing out there and we got our strategy spot on,” he said.
“I want to thank everyone back at the factory and say hello to everyone watching at home in these difficult times. Stay safe – and keep wearing those masks.”
