Heartland work in progress, says Onyegbule

Heartland coach, Ezekiel Onyegbule has described his side as a work in progress in the six-week old Nigerian top-flight.

The Naze Millionaires came from behind to defeat Akwa United 2-1 in Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 6 clash at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.

Former NPFL top scorer, Mfon Udoh scored the match opener for the Promise Keepers in the 34th minute and Samuel Nnoshiri even scores from the penalty spot for the Owerri side in the 52nd minute while Nduka Pascal grabbed the winner in the 81st minute to hand his side their second home victory in the on-going top-flight.

Onyegbule said the Owerri landlords will get even better with incredible performances as the ongoing league progresses.

“It’s a great game today against Akwa United. Prior to the game I said Heartland would claim the maximum three points at stake and we have just done that.

“I still believe that Heartland is a work in progress, we will continue to push higher and higher and I know we are going to get better as the league progresses.

“We are still trying to put every department in order, we are using every game to improve, perfect our act and put everything in right shape,” said Onyegbule.

Onyegbule said the bench was naturally worried when the visitors went up with the opening goal but added that the pep talk at half time did the magic for his side.

“Yes, we were seriously worried with the early lead by Akwa United but after the half time break we went into the dressing room to talk to the players, we injected some tactical inputs and we returned to hit two goals into their net.

“We started the game slowly but in the second half we pushed harder knowing their area of weakness.

“Well, in football how one finishes is important than how one started, we started slowly but ended up picking the valuable three points, that’s what we have done this evening,” said Onyegbule.

Heartland have  garnered six points from possible 18 in the six-week old Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). The Owerri side will be the guests of Jigawa Golden Stars in matchday 7 at the weekend.
