Benfica head coach, Jorge Jesus believes that Atletico Madrid star, João Félix will be the reference point of Portuguese football in the years to come.
Félix’s performances for club and country in recent months have been nothing short of eye-catching and Jesus has been suitably impressed.
The veteran trainer discussed the important inroads made by his compatriot in the build up to Benfica’s UEFA Europa League game against Glasgow Rangers on Thursday.
“João Félix, as you know, was part of this house. He gave his best when I was no longer in Portugal, but I had the opportunity to watch his games in Brazil (when he was coaching Flamengo),” Jesus said in the press conference.
“I always said that he was going to be a player above normal and he is showing it. I have no doubt that he will improve even more and will be a great reference for Portuguese football.
“He is at Atlético de Madrid and to stand out in a squad like this you have to be worth a lot “he explained.
Jesus then took the time to highlight the performances of another Portuguese footballer who is shining for his exemplary performances in Europe is Liverpool player, Diogo Jota.
After a fantastic hat trick against Atalanta in the Champions League, the Eagles coach wanted to aim for his great moment of form.
“Diogo Jota is one of those athletes who started from scratch, they didn’t have the facility to start with the greats, and they kept going up until they got to where they got.
“Last year it was a surprise in the English league and now they have reached the best team in the world, who won all last year, and I was one of his victims in the Club World Cup.
“When you come to Liverpool and play despite having Salah, Mané and Firmino you have to be a great player.
“It’s good for football Portuguese, for the National Team and for Fernando Santos,” he concluded.
