Klopp not keen on Anfield Statue

Jürgen Klopp has played down suggestions by Liverpool legend, Steven Gerard, that a statue in honour of the German manager be erected at Anfield.

Klopp told the Echo that former Liverpool Managers were honoured long after their time at the club:

“They all got their statues when they were not here, right? I am not interested in statues, for sure not in my lifetime.”

“I am the manager and we won the league. People see it positively but we don’t have to compare with the icons.”

“I want to live for another 30 or 40 years so I’m not interested in statues (of himself). We don’t have to compare me with the great figures.”

“Shankly changed the club, Paisley won everything, Dalglish was player and a manager, there is no comparison possible. It is not needed.”

Gerrard gave his reason for making the suggestion before Liverpool won the league on Thursday night (June 25).

“To come to Liverpool when he did, get to the amount of finals that he has, deliver the sixth European Cup and then deliver the first league title after 30 years.

“For me, someone like Jurgen should be rewarded now. It seems like in football we often wait until people get older before their achievements are fully recognised”
