Holland’s national football team coach, Ronald Koeman has given an update about his health after he underwent heart surgery less than a week ago.
Koeman says he feels “as fit as a fiddle again” after the procedure and is raring to go.
Koeman suffered a heart attack at his home in Bussum, a town 20 miles outside Amsterdam, on Sunday afternoon.
He was promptly rushed to hospital where he underwent an angiogram at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre that confirmed the doctors’ initial diagnosis.
The 57 year-old had been embarking on regular bike rides to maintain his fitness during the coronavirus lockdown.
He felt initial chest pains after returning from a ride and has subsequently had two catheters fitted to relieve a clogged artery.
“Fortunately, the AMC doctors were quick to help me and acted wonderfully, for which I am very grateful,” Koeman said.
“Such an event really helps bring you down to earth. It was fantastic for me to see how many people showed compassion. And how many sweet messages I have received.
“From acquaintances from the football world, from clubs. But also from complete strangers.
“That really meant a lot to me and I would like to thank everyone for that!
“Meanwhile I feel fit as a fiddle again. And that means that I will be back giving it my all, as soon as the ball starts rolling again.
“Once again: Thank you to everyone who supported me. We’ll meet again soon!,” he concluded.
Koeman, who has been national team coach since February 2018, had been preparing for Euro 2020, – the Oranje’s first summer tournament since the 2014 World Cup – until the coronavirus outbreak forced the competition to be cancelled.
The Netherlands’ next competitive fixtures are due to be home games against Poland and Italy in the UEFA Nations League in September.
