RB Leipzig have moved up to third in Germany’s Bundesliga after recording a 4-2 victory over FC Köln on Monday night (June 1).
The hosts started the quicker of the two sides when Jhon Cordoba netted the opening goal of the contest on seven minutes at the RheinEnergie Stadion. The goal was scored in fortuitous fashion as Elvis Rexhbecaj’s came off the post and fell towards the path of Cordoba who wasted no time in smacking the loose ball home from close range
Leipzig got back on level terms in the 20th minute through Patrick Shick who headed home Angelino’s precise cross in clinical fashion.
Seven minutes before the break, the visitors took the lead for the first time in the game when Christopher Nkunku netted following good work from Konrad Laimer.
Leipzig were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and went further ahead when Timo Werner netted in the 50th minute with Peter Gulacsi credited with the assist.
Köln were not going to go away though and made a fight of it when Anthony Modeste – who had replaced injured goalscorer, Cordoba -struck in exemplary fashion from outside the box to give the hosts hope of a late fightback.
Daniel Olmo, however, made sure Julian Nagelsmann’s men left Köln with the maximum points with his scrappy goal in the 57th minute.
Cologne have now amassed 58 points from 29 matches while Köln, with 34 from 29 games, are in 11th place.
