Robert Lewandowski has smashed Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga goal-scoring record which has lasted for almost five decades.
The Polish marksman netted reigning champions, Bayern Munich’s final goal in their 5-2 victory over FC Augsburg on Saturday which was the final matchday of the 2020-21 campaign.
Hence, the Bundesliga top scorer took his domestic goal-tally to 41 for the season with the Bavarians, which confirmed a new record was set.
The previous record was held by Bayern and Germany legend, Muller which was 40, set in the 1971-72 season.
Almost 50 years on, Lewandowski initially tied the record after netting in last week Saturday’s draw with Freiburg but he has moved clear in the record books with another goal a week later.
41 goals in a 34-game season has made Lewandowski prove to be one of the greatest strikers in the history of the Bundesliga.
