Liverpool finally lift Premier League Trophy

Jordan Henderson became the first Liverpool captain to raise the Premier League trophy in thirty years after a pulsating 5-3 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night (July 22).

The Reds hoisted the Premier League trophy without their famous Anfield fans but with plenty of fireworks in what was an unusual yet truly amazing presentation.

The icing on the cake was the presentation of the trophy by Liverpool legend, Sir Kenny Dalglish, the last manager to win the title, in 1990. It was “King Kenny” who signed Henderson during his latest spell as manager.

The Reds won the title on June 25 with seven games to spare after Chelsea beat contenders Manchester City, but had to wait for their final home game of the season – incidentally against Chelsea – to lift the trophy. They needed the win to keep their home record – which now stands at 59 games unbeaten – intact.

Naby Keita shot Liverpool ahead in the 23rd minute and his goal was followed by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick for the second in the 38th minute while Gini Wijnaldum added the third goal on 43 minutes before Olivier Giroud pulled one back for Chelsea, just before half-time.

The Reds scored again after the break, through Roberto Firmino, who headed in his first home field goal of the season from Alexander-Arnold’s cross on 55 minutes. However Chelsea substitute, Christian Pulisic was not going to let things slide.

The American inspired Chelsea by setting up Tammy Abraham for Chelsea’s second goal on 63 minutes, before scoring his side’s third, to make it 4-3 on 73 minutes. As Chelsea pushed for the equalizer, Liverpool substitute, Alex Oxlade-chamberlain scored the fifth in the 84th minute to give them the 5-3 victory.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp:

“We are champions – it’s the truth. We won four trophies, big ones. I couldn’t be prouder. Usually I don’t need pictures with something, but I will have a picture with all four trophies, it doesn’t happen too often.”

Klopp to Liverpool fans:

“If you cannot see that we do this for you then I cannot help you, really. Five years ago I asked you to change from doubters to believers. I asked and you did it. You made us champions. Thank you very much. We should all celebrate. Drink what you want but you have you to prepare for a party when this b******t virus is gone. Then we will have a party all together. Make sure you are ready then.”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson speaking to Sky Sports:

“Walking up there was amazing. The lads deserved their moment tonight. Thankfully the families were up there watching, that was a big thing for us. It’s been an amazing season, to crown it off like that was special.”

“The start was really good and from there we just grew and grew as the season went on. We stronger, more confident, more ruthless, really. We found a way to win on so many occasions and that was down to mentality. The lads have been great all season and deserve what they are getting now.”

“To get 97 points last year and not win was hard to take. We reacted a few weeks later, won the Champions League and then started the season a few weeks later with unfinished business. It’s been an amazing season and I am so thankful to be part of this club and team that has won the Premier League after 30 years.”

“Winning the Premier League has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. That’s why you join Liverpool, you want to win trophies, the expectations are so high. When you come as a young player it was so difficult, but it has been a process, a journey that doesn’t happen overnight. It’s been five years since the gaffer came in and every single player has been a part of that journey.”
