Diego Maradona’s son has said it would be logical for Spanish club FC Barcelona to retire the famous No. 10 jersey, which is currently held by Lionel Messi, in honour of his father.
Maradona passed away on Wednesday last week after suffering a suspected heart attack, and his eldest son, Diego Maradona Jr, is of the view that every club the Argentine legend played for should retire the famous jersey he wore.
“In the teams that he played for, I believe so, including Barcelona. Without a doubt,” he told Spanish publication Marca.
Maradona spent two seasons with Barca between 1982 and 1984, scoring 38 goals in 58 appearances and winning the Copa del Rey, Copa de La Liga and Spanish Super Cup during his stay with the club.
The 1986 FIFA World Cup winner is still held in high regard at Camp Nou, especially by countryman Messi who paid a special tribute to Maradona during the Blaugrana’s recent LaLiga victory over Osasuna. Messi’s tribute was one of many that have been made to the legendary forward since his passing last week, and Maradona Jr. admitted that he is incredibly proud to see the legacy his father has left behind.
“It was very touching. There have been emotional days and what Leo did was special, very beautiful,” he said.
“It really touched me and made me cry, just as Napoli’s, Gimnasia’s and Boca’s [tributes did]. I feel very proud of the legacy my father left.”
