Bayern Munich moved to the top of Germany’s Bundesliga after matchday seven, following a classy 3-2 victory over bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund were quicker out of the blocks and took the lead on the stroke of halftime through Marco Reus who opened up his body admirably to slam home Raphaël Guerreiro’s precise cutback.

Bayern then pushed forward and earned a free-kick at the edge of the Dortmund penalty area just before the referee sounded his whistle for the interval. David Alaba stepped forward to strike majestically into the corner with the last kick of the half to drastically alter the team talk of both managers.

The goal was the tonic Bayern needed to stir from hibernation and they quickly took the lead for the first time in the game, three minutes after the break. Robert Lewandowski was the man on the money as he met Lucas Hernández’s brilliant cross with a stunning header that the Dortmund goalkeeper, Roman Buerki failed to stop.

Bayern went 3-1 up in the 80th minute following a lightning break with Leroy Sane applying the finishing touch with a fierce left-footed drive into the far bottom corner.

The home side was to claim a late consolation through Norwegian marksman, Erling Braut Haaland who rounded the Bayern keeper, Manuel Neuer to fire home from an acute angle with Guerreiro claiming his second assist of the night via a sumptuous chipped pass. Bayern have now amassed 18 points from seven matches while third-placed Dortmund are three points adrift of the leaders from Munich.

Second-placed RasenBallsport Leipzig beat Freiburg 3-0 at the Red Bull Arena to remain on Bayern’s coat tails. Ibrahima Konate, Marcel Sabitzer and Angelino netted for Julian Nagelsmann’s men who have now amassed 16 points from their first seven games of the season.

The season’s surprise package, Union Berlin continue to punch above their weight as they steamrolled Arminia Bielefeld 5-0 with Keita Endo, Robert Andrich, Sheraldo Becker, Max Kruse and Cedric Teuchert supplying the goals for Die Eisernen at Alte Foersterei.

On Sunday, Renato Steffen and Wout Weghorst netted as VfL Wolfsburg beat TSG Hoffeinheim 2-0 at the Volkswagen Arena. Bayer Leverkusen won a thriller 4-3 against Borussia Moenchengladbach to move into the Champions League places. Lucas Alaria and Lars Stindil both netted braces for their respective sides in the cracking but in the end, it was Julian Baumgartlinger’s effort that settled the contest as the hosts moved up to fourth.
