PSG forward, Kylian Mbappe has written that he would like to share Ligue 1’s golden boot award with AS Monaco attacker and fellow French international, Wissam Ben Yedder. Organizers declared Mbappe winner of the award this week despite both men notching up 18 goals apiece for their respective clubs in the 2019/20 season. The season was stopped prematurely due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
Mbappe was awarded the prize outright because all his goals came from open play while Ben Yedder scored three of his 18 goals from the penalty spot.
Mbappe however promptly took to social media to say he believes sharing the award with his compatriot would represent a more just outcome.
“Thank you for all your messages. I think that Wissam also deserves a trophy, like the Premier League did last season, to reward his year,” Mbappe posted. He ended his post with the hashtag ‘A trophy for Wissam’.
Predictably, Mbappe’s message was well-received by Ben Yedder who also took to social media to express his appreciation of his international colleague’s sentiments. Ben Yedder’s reply included a tongue-in-cheek solution.
“Thank you bro, congratulations to you… We can alternate if you want,” he wrote.
Mbappe’s Premier League reference was to the 2018-19 Golden Boot, which was shared between Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. All scored 22 goals.
For Mbappe, it was the second straight season that he finished as Ligue 1’s top goalscorer.
Having scored 33 goals in 2018-19, his haul of 18 goals this time around had helped PSG to a 12-point lead in the Ligue, ahead of Marseille, before the season was suspended in March
