MFM stuns Enyimba International

MFM FC pulled off a shock victory against Enyimba International with a 1-0 win at the Agege Stadium in a rescheduled matchday 15 fixture of the 2020-21 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Ebenezer Odeyemi’s first half strike was enough to give MFM their first win in eight games against Enyimba. The win lifts the ‘Olukoya Boys’ out of the relegation zone and into 14th place on the log.

John Noble and Anayo Iwuala have been standout performers for Enyimba in this campaign but were notable absentees due to their engagement with the national team but Fatai Osho’s side were looking to continue their fine form on the road. Enyimba had an opportunity to open the scoring as Emmanuel Ampaih’s free kick found Victor Mboama but the striker failed to convert as his header went off target.

MFM woke up from their early slumber and used their fair share of chances to good effect as they took the lead in the 22nd minute.
Ebenezer Odeyemi was on hand to convert MFM’s 12th goal of the campaign after Olufemi Kayode had kept out Akanni Elijah’s initial attempt.

Stung into action, the visitors upped the ante in search of an equaliser. Cyril Olisema failed to direct his header into the back of the net in the 28th minute after he was left unmarked in the penalty area.

Enyimba had lost each of the previous two games in which they found themselves trailing at half-time. On the brink of their third, Fatai Osho turned to his bench in his search for points with two changes. Tosin Omoyele and Samad Kadiri replaced Samson Obi and Gabriel Orok respectively.

The People’s Elephant continued to push for an equaliser as Stanley Okorom made a great run into the MFM area in an attempt to find Victor Mboama but was met by a brilliant interception. MFM held on to their lead thanks to some hard-knuckle defending as they recorded a famous triumph over the eight-time Nigerian champions.

Enyimba’s ambitions of moving joint top at the top of the NPFL standings were put on hold as they remain three points behind Kwara United but with three games in hand, the Aba club will remain favourites to claim the biggest prize in Nigerian football.
