Most expensive NPFL star, Afelokhai speaks on Rivers United switch

Theophilus Joel Afelokhai has dispelled notions that he dumped two-time African champions for Rivers United because of financial considerations.
Afelokhai became the most expensive footballer in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) when he joined the ‘Pride of Rivers’ in a deal that will see him pocket a reported N1.2 million every month.
The goalkeeper who has also previously played for Kano Pillars has now revealed that he joined Rivers United for professional reasons.
“Leaving Enyimba to join Rivers United was not an easy decision to make,”Afelekhai told spnafricanews.com.
“This move wasn’t just all about the money. I have had to deal with a similar situation when I was in Kano Pillars.
“I was so comfortable in Kano and was the captain of Pillars but I felt I’d stayed there for so long and needed a fresh challenge.
“Everyone was surprised when I took the decision to move to Enyimba from Kano and the feelings now from the fans is also similar.
“I have played at Enyimba for almost five seasons and have paid my dues there.
“It is not all about the money because when I was at Enyimba, I was also the highest paid player in the Nigerian League.”
Rivers United will be gunning for glory on domestic and continental fronts and Afelokhai, a wily campaigner with bags of experience under his belt is looking forward to the task at hand.
“I am looking forward to this latest chapter of my career.
“This gives me a chance to work with Stanley Eguma, the most experienced coach in the league.
“I want to give my best to help Rivers United to be successful.”
