Two Nigerian football players, Dayo Ojo and Benjamin Iluyomade have been reportedly seized by gunmen on Sunday.
Ojo, a midfielder with eight-time Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba was travelling along with two other players Emma James and Iluyomade, who plays for Abia Comets.
Reports claim that the kidnappers lay siege to the Benin-Owo Road where they seized Ojo and Iluyomade while James was fortunate to escape during the incident.
However there are additional reports suggesting that the players were abducted around Ipele town in Ifon, Ondo State.
The spokesman of the Ondo State police command, Tee-Leo Ikoro, confirmed the incident and said the kidnappers are being tracked.
“We have been able to rescue one of the players and our men are already in the bush after the kidnappers. I will get the details of the incident as soon as I get the information from the Divisional Police Officer of Ipele Owo,” Ikoro told Nigerian newspaper Vanguard.
The kidnapping of Ojo and Iluyomade rounds off an incident filled Sunday for Nigeria’s football off the pitch after two Rangers players Ifeanyi George and Emmanuel Ogbu were declared dead following a fatal accident.
