Premier League, 2020/21 season to commence in September

All 20 Premier League clubs have been told that the 2020/21 season will commence by the first week of September.
England’s 2019/20 Premier League season has been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic which has generally affected the sports calendar globally.
Nine round of matches are still to be navigated and it is widely believed that the season cannot be restarted any later than July due to lockdown regulations in the UK.
Premier League seasons usually start on the second weekend in August which this year would be the 8/9th of the month.

The weekend of the first week of September would be the 5/6th of September, which means the proposed start date is just 4 weeks behind the usual schedule.
The last top flight fixture that took place was Leicester’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday March 9th, almost six weeks ago.

The Premier League are reportedly ‘hopeful’ that the current season can resume on the week beginning June 8 but this is all dependent on whether Government restrictions remain in place or not.
These messages were relayed to the 20 Premier League clubs in a video-conference meeting on Friday.
The clubs discussed the issue of how players will return to training, with one plan being for them to initially work in pairs for an hour at the training ground having got changed in their cars to minimise the contact.
Clubs are expected to be told they will have three weeks from when the Government gives the go-ahead for them to be allowed to train to playing matches which will take place behind doors.
However, the Premier League are yet to address issues regarding contracts for players, with expired contract often ending on June 30.
The Telegraph adds that the ‘prime importance’ is to not ‘damage’ two seasons by possibly extending the current campaign beyond the summer.
Liverpool need just two more wins to be crowned champions for the first time since 1990.
