PSL set to resume on August 8

The new South African Premier Soccer League season looks set to restart on August 8. The new date was touted following Monday’s (July 27) PSL board of governors meeting, with the competition set to resume in the next fortnight.

The PSL has been in hiatus for the last four months following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. However, plans have now been finalised for a return of South Africa’s top flight. After the previously-planned 18 July return date could not be met by SAFA and its officials, the Association had proposed 1 August as the resumption date.

A resumption date was reportedly decided after key decision-makers agreed that the PSL should take the lead in deciding a start date. The PSL has chosen Gauteng as the biologically safe environment in which all 32 teams are meant to finish the Absa Premiership, GladAfrica Championship and Nedbank Cup.

SAFA also confirmed last week that referees have started to check in to a hotel in Sandton as they continue preparations to be ready for the restart.

PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza has always been adamant that the football season must be completed and it appears the restart is on track after the majority of PSL stakeholders agreed to the new date. The PSL is set to confirm all details in an official statement in due course.
