Real Madrid and Barcelona matches – famously known as El Clasico – look set to expand to women’s football after Real Madrid C. F. announced it’s plans to launch a women’s team.
Real said in a statement that they have sent the corresponding documentation to the Spanish Football Federation in order to complete the merger with Club Deportivo Tacón, a women’s football club.
The merger had already been approved by the Extraordinary General Assembly of Committed Members of Real Madrid held on 15 September 2019.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation has confirmed and approved the merger effective from the end of the 2019-20 football season.
Real Madrid Women will play in women’s football competitions from the 2020/21 season, at the Real Madrid City.
Real Madrid further stated that:
“The women’s football section will be made up of the senior and under-16s to under-19s teams.”
“A youth structure… will allow us to remain faithful to our philosophy of identifying, training and developing young talent. Our teams will also play their respective competitions from the 2020/21 season.”
“Real Madrid are looking forward to this new challenge with a commitment to promoting women’s football and contributing to its development and growth in our society.”
