Real Madrid win La Liga title

Real Madrid won the 2019/20 La Liga title Thursday night (July 16) with one game to go, after beating Villarreal 2-1 at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

This was Real’s 34th La Liga title win as they headed into their last game with a huge seven-point lead.

Karim Benzema scored both goals, the first a shot between the legs of Sergio Asenjo in the 29th minute and the second a retaken penalty in the 76th minute, making this the 10th successive win for Real Madrid since the restart.

Villareal pulled one back through Vicente Iborra with a powerful header in the 86th minute and a Marco Asensio goal would have made it 3-3 but it was ruled out by VAR VAR in injury-time.

Zinedine Zidane’s side head into the final day of the season knowing they cannot be caught by as second-placed Barcelona, who lost 2-1 to 10-man Osasuna.

Zidane has now won an incredible 11 titles in his two spells as Real Madrid Manager, including, two League titles, three UEFA Champions League titles, two Supercopa de Españas, two Uefa Super Cup and two Fifa Club World Cup
