Rodgers commends Ndidi on new role

Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers has commended Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi after he starred in a centre back role as the Foxes defeated West Brom 3-0 to go joint top of the Premier League on Sunday (September 13).

Ndidi usually plays in a defensive midfield position for club and country but was drafted at centre back in the last two games for the Foxes by Rodgers.

The former Liverpool boss was impressed with the performance of his Nigerian charge and took the time to laud the Super Eagles man for a solid showing which helped the former Premier League champions keep a clean sheet at the Hawthorns.

“Very (proud of Ndidi’s performance) and also with the goalkeeper and the whole back four who have been away with their (national teams),” Rodgers told a news conference monitored by SNPAfricaNews.com.

“We had just two days to work together so it was never going to be perfect and at the start of the game, there were a couple of heavy passes and the cohesion wasn’t quite there.

“But for Wilf (Ndidi), it’s about the level of trust I have for him. I will never expose any player to play in a position that I never ever thought that they could.

“And when he slotted in there (at centre half), he is 6’2 but he can jump so high. He is good in the air and quick in his recovery speed.

“Wilf was very very good and the others (who played as part of the back four, Timoty Castagne, Çaglar Söyüncü and James Justin) showe great cohesion considering that they haven’t worked a lot together.”
