Serie A players demand four weeks of training before restart

Players in Italy’s top flight, Serie A want a full four weeks of training before they make a return to competitive action.
The competition has been on break since March 12 following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was announced last week that the league plans to resume on June 13, on condition the Italian government grants approval. The league’s general assembly met on May 13 via videoconference and approved the resumption date “in accordance with government decisions and medical protocols”.

However, Italian Footballers Association (AIC) president Damiano Tommasi has now revealed that players in Serie A should have at least four weeks of training before resuming the Serie A season.

“At least four weeks of training to avoid injuries, although some speak of six,” Tomassi told RAI.
“Prudence comes first because at this point you need real certainties from a medical and health point of view. Footballers need days to find their condition.
“We hope to accelerate in the coming weeks,” he said.

Clubs have now been cleared to resume training in preparation for the resumption of the season.
There is expected to be further detail on May 28, when it is set to be known when and if the season will restart.
Juventus held a one-point lead over Lazio atop the Serie A table when the season was stopped.
