Manchester United marched into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League after coming from a goal down to defeat Austrian club, LASK 2-1 in the second leg of their round of 16 tie at Old Trafford on Wednesday (August 5).
The Austrians lost the first leg 5-0 but stunned the hosts by taking the lead in the 55th minute when Philipp Wiesinger scored a stupendous goal. United, however, roared back to seal the comeback win thanks to goals from Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial to complete a 7-1 aggregate success.
Inter Milan were also in action on Wednesday night, beating Spanish side Getafe 2-0 at the Veltins Arena. Romelu Lukaku and Christian Eriksen the goal scorers for Antonio Conte’s charges.
Ukrainian club, Shakhtar Donetsk also qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition after outclassing Wolfsburg 3-0 at the Stadion NSK Olimpiyskiy, Kyiv. The Ukrainians astonished Wolfsburg by scoring three goals in the final two minutes to complete a 5-1 aggregate success over the Germans. Manor Solomon netted between Junior Moraes’ brace as Shakhtar progressed to the last eight in a comprehensive fashion.
In the day’s other early kickoff, FC Koebenhavn (Cophenhagen) won 3-0 against Turkish club, Istanbul Basaksehir at Telia Parken to ensure the Danes progressed to the last eight on a 3-1 aggregate, having lost the first leg, 1-0. Jonas Wind netted a brace while Rasmus Falk was the other goalscoring contributor.
