Mamelodi Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca has died after he was involved in a car crash on Monday (November 22). The 33-year-old was on the verge of completing a move to Premier Soccer League (PSL) club AmaZulu before the incident transpired.

Ngcongca had already arrived in Durban after a loan agreement was struck between Sundowns AmaZulu. Sundowns had agreed on a one-year loan with a further option of making the move permanent next season. Ngcongca succumbed to severe injuries sustained during a crash on the N2 highway early on Monday.

“At 05:00 this morning, a vehicle with two occupants lost control and overturned on the N2 freeway near Mtunzini,” revealed SAPS Brigadier Jay Naicker.  “A 33-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation. A case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation by Mtunzini SAPS.”
Ngcongca enjoyed a stunning career which led him to Belgium, where he turned out for KRC Genk, and France, where he served Troyes in Ligue 1 for a season, before returning to South Africa to join The Brazilians.
He also earned over 50 senior international caps with Bafana Bafana, including an appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
