Awoniyi scores as Union Berlin put Dortmund to the sword

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored for German club Union Berlin as the Köpenick club defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Friday (December 18).

 The former Flying Eagles attacker headed home from close range in the 57th minute, latching onto Grischa Prömel’s flick on as Dortmund failed to properly defend a corner. It was his fourth league goal of the season following earlier strikes against VfB Stuttgart, Hertha Berlin and Köln.

Dortmund were however back on level terms on the hour as youngster Youssoufa Moukoko struck a historic goal.
The 16-year-old struck from a tight angle with frightening force after he was played in by Raphaël Guerreiro on the far side.
Moukoko has now become the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history.

Moukoko became the German top flight’s youngest debutant in November, coming off the bench for Erling Haaland against Hertha Berlin aged just 16 years and one day.

The following weeks have seen him also break the records for the youngest Bundesliga start and the youngest player to feature in the Champions League, beating marks set by Nuri Sahin and Celestine Babayaro respectively. 

The day however belonged to Union who grabbed the winner through Marvin Friedrich’s header with 12 minutes remaining.
Union Berlin have now moved up to fifth place on the standings having amassed 21 points from 13 matches while Dortmund remain in fourth with 22 points from 13 games.
