Newly crowned Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by 10th placed SC Freiburg at Schwarzwald-Stadion as Matchday 33 of the German top-flight saw seven games decided on Saturday (May 15).

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring through a penalty on 26 minutes, netting his 40th goal of the domestic campaign and also equalling the record for most goals in a single campaign set by Gerd Muller in the 1971-72 season. The hosts rallied back and equalised three minutes later thanks to Manuel Gulde’s goal to keep the scores at one-all heading into the break.

Hansi Flick’s side got their noses front again on 53 minutes through Leroy Sane but Freiburg replied back with nine minutes to go. Christian Günter did the honours of netting the equaliser to ensure both teams finished the game with a share of the spoils.

Fifth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a massive blow to their quest for a place in the UEFA Champions League next season as they were stunned by bottom club Schalke 04 in a seven-goal thriller at Veltins Arena. Klaas Jan Huntelaar netted the first goal of the contest at the quarter-hour but André Silva equalised for Frankfurt on 29 minutes.

An eventful second half began in the 51st minute thanks to Evan N’Dicka’s goal for Frankfurt but Schalke equalised less than a minute later as Blendi Idrizi found the back of the net. Florian Flix put Schalke ahead at the hour mark and Matthew Hoppe lengthened the gap four minutes later.

André Silva completed his brace with another goal in the 72nd minute but it would only prove to be a consolation. The win helps already relegated Schalke to their third win of the season and the loss means Frankfurt will not qualify for the Champions League next season if Dortmund beat Mainz tomorrow.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FC Union Berlin settled for a 1-1 draw at BayArena. Florian Wirtz got the opening goal on 26 minutes but Joel Pohjanpalo levelled matters in the 72nd minute as Leverkusen remained sixth on the log and Union retained 7th place. Both teams have amassed 52 points and 47 points respectively.

Borussia Mönchengladbach were on the losing end as they hosted VfB Stuttgart. Two goals in five minutes from Wataru Endo and Sasa Kalajdzic to cancel out Lars Stindl’s opener helped Stuttgart to record a 2-1 win over Mönchengladbach. Stuttgart moved to 9th after amassing 45 points, within a point and a place behind their fallen opponents.

11th-placed 1899 Hoffenheim and 15th placed Arminia Bielefeld played out a one-all draw thanks to first-half goals for Andrej Kramaric and Andreas Voglsammer. The shared points help Bielefeld to 32 points on the log while Hoffenheim have amassed 40 points this season.

FC Augsburg defeated Werder Bremen 2-0 to move to 12th on the standings. Rani Khedira and Daniel Caligiuri were on the scoresheet as both teams finished the game with 10 men. Bremen have now dropped to the relegation/promotion playoff spot in 16th after amassing 31 points.

The game involving 14th placed Hertha Berlin and 17th placed 1. FC Köln ended in a stalemate.
