Liverpool’s hopes of completing the season with a 100% Premier League home record ended today after being held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Anfield. At Bramall Lane, David McGoldrick scored twice as Sheffield United beat Chelsea 3-0 to dent their Champions League chase and Man City blew out Brighton 5-0 away from home with Raheem Sterling delivering a remarkable hat-trick.
Andy Robertson gave Liverpool a first-half lead but Jay Rodriguez equalized in the second half, scoring from inside the box after a James Tarkowski header set him up.
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp was left frustrated by the incredible performance of Burnley goalkeeper, Nicky Pope, who pulled off eight saves .
“It was a good performance in most parts of the game,” Klopp said. “There were moments when it was Liverpool against Nick Pope. It’s hard to create against a team so organised but we created super chances.
“There was always one guy who wanted to deny us and it was Nick Pope. The game left the result open for Burnley. There were corners where Ali (Alisson) was under pressure from those around him and they were always a threat from set-pieces.
“I’m fine for the performance for 80 minutes and it was probably one of our best games against Burnley, but we couldn’t get a second and that’s why we’ve been left with a point.”
Earlier in the day, Troy Deeney scored two second-half penalties as the Hornets came from behind once more to beat the Magpies and open up vital breathing space as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Watford manager, Nigel Pearson told BBC Match of the Day: “Anything can happen. We have to keep our focus now, and it is not about thinking the job is done – we have got three more games to make sure we win enough points ourselves.”
“What happens elsewhere can help, but if you are reliant on that you are in for a bit of a shock, so our focus has to be there.”
Newcastle started the better side and shot into a 23rd-minute lead when Dwight Gayle connected with Federico Fernandez’s flick off a Matt Ritchie corner.
