It was a massive boost for African football development Sunday as hosts, DR Congo defeated Senegal 3-1 and Morocco’s impressive girls team beat South Africa 1-0 in a hard fought game as both emerged Champions of Africa for the very first time in the Inaugural African Schools Champions cup at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday (February 20).
The two-day tourney showcased talent from six African countries and is a sign of things to come. At the end of the day, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino and CAF President, Patrice Motsepe were on hand to present trophies and prizes to the winners
“I am a happy man tonight,” said the FIFA President.
“Seeing those children smile, boys and girls, with joy in their eyes is wonderful. This is the beauty of football. DR Congo did a great job organizing this event, which is the first edition of a fantastic competition that is going to become one of the biggest not only in Africa, but around the world too.”
It was the confidence, intelligence and charisma of the young Moroccans that caught the attention of the fans inside the Stade De Martyrs on Sunday the 20th of February 2022. Impressive displays from Fatima Zahraa Naini, who won the player of the tournament, and Yasmine Sioui was enough to earn them the trophy.
The African Schools Championship is a competition organized by FIFA to support grassroots football development on the African continent; It is expected that the next edition will have more African countries after a pilot test of 6 teams this year.
