Stanley Eguma has attributed Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Professional Football League to defensive mistakes.
Rivers United technical manager, Eguma insists his charges would have escaped defeat at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Wednesday but for the solitary moment of indiscretion.
Nyima Nwagua scored the decisive goal in the 19th minute leaving Eguma to reflect on what might have been.
“It was not a bad game and we conceded against the run of play,” Eguma told reporters shortly after the game. “The goal was conceded as a result of the carelessness of my defence but it’s part of the game.
“We have lost today and we have to go back and prepare for other games. We tried our best to see how we could break the Pillars defence but we lost the opportunities when they came.”
Rivers United will next face Adamawa United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday as the competition enters matchday seven. A win for the Port Harcourt side will see them leapfrog the leaders Nasarawa United unless the Lafia club defeats Plateau United in Jos.
Eguma understands the enormity of the task at hand and insists that his charges will not take their eyes off the ball.
“It’s another game and we have to go back (to Port Harcourt) and prepare for that game. The league is hotting up and every point is important.
“Those three points are important and we have to work towards (amassing them).
“We have to ensure that we win that game.”
