Rivers United overcame South African club, Bloemfontein Celtic in a first leg, first-round tie of the 2020-21 CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday afternoon (December 23), winning 2-0.

Rivers’ victory came through late goals from Godwin Aguda and Fortune Omoniwari in the game at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Previously, the Nigerian club had overcome Equatoguinean club, Futuro Kings on penalties in the preliminary round of the competition.
The side was looking to make improvements in the game against Phunya Sele Sele as both sides looked to reach the playoff round. Celtic will now have a tough battle, with the return match to be held in Port Harcourt.

Bloemfontein Celtic beat Congo DR Club Association Sportive Maniema Union on penalties in the preliminary stages despite losing the first leg 2-0 away from home.

Technical manager of Rivers United FC, Stanley Eguma was clear that a tough road lies ahead for his charges.
“We have to work harder because the higher you go in the competition, the tougher it becomes,” Eguma told SPANAfricaNews.
