Nigeria’s most successful club, Enyimba International came from behind to beat Algeria Ligue 1 leaders, Entente Sportive Sétif (ES Sétif) 2-1 to move to the top of Group A of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Algerians, winless in their previous two tries in the group, took a shock lead at the Enyimba International Stadium through Monsef Bakrar in the 13th minute.
Enyimba’s backline was carved open by the Algerians who displayed some quick thinking with Ahmed Kandouci squaring for the unmarked Bakrar to plant his effort into an unguarded net from close range.
Enyimba however stepped on the accelerator and were back on level terms with five minutes left of the half.
Captain Austin Oladapo rifled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box following a simple assist from Ojo Ekundayo as the visitors failed to properly defend a throw in.
Enyimba then made sure of the points on the hour through Tosin Omoyele following some extraordinary piece of dare devil play from Anayo Iwuala whose twinkle feet left no less than four ES Sétif players in his wake with the goal scorer left with the simple task of picking his spot and powering past the badly exposed Soufiane Khedairia in the visitors’ goal.
The Nigerians have now moved to the top of Group A with six points from their opening three games.
South African club, Orlando Pirates can however leapfrog Enyimba and move to the summit of the standings if they defeat Libyan club, Al Ahli Benghazi at the Martyrs of February Stadium, Benghazi on Sunday night.
