Nigeria’s most successful club, Enyimba International are on course to meet Rivers United in the playoff round of the CAF Confrontation Cup.
Enyimba failed to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League after losing 4-2 on aggregate to Sudanese club, Al Merrikh in the first round. All first-round losers in the Champions League, however, drop to the CAF Confederation Cup playoff round and Enyimba have now drawn the winner of the Rivers United versus Bloemfontein Celtic tie.
United seem to be in the driver’s seat to earn the right to progress as they won the first leg of their first-round tie against the South Africans, 2-0 in the Free State.
In other stand-out ties, Ghanian giants Asante Kotoko and Algerian heavyweights ES Setif will go toe to toe to earn the right to progress to the group stages of the competition, while Tunisian side CS Sfaxien of Tunisia face AS Kigali of Rwanda. The Tunisian side is the most successful side in the history of the competition, with three titles.
Orlando Pirates of South Africa will travel to Botswana to face Jwaneng Galaxy. They secured qualification to this stage of the competition which they have made an appearance on two occasions following a walkover win over Sagrada Esperança.
Two-time winners of the competition, Etoile du Sahel have a date with Young Buffaloes of Estwatini. The Tunisian champions on ten occasions achieved qualification to this stage after a 2-1 aggregate win over Al Mokawloon.
