President of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), President Gabriele Gravina has confirmed that five substitutions will be allowed when Italy’s Serie A commences for 2020/21 campaign. This follows an emergency ruling announced on Wednesday (September 9).
The move has been introduced was to prevent injuries and exhaustion in the post-COVID lockdown period, when games were played in the heat of summer every three days.FIFA gave permission for the rule to continue for the 2020-21 campaign, due to the unusual circumstances that continue to affect football.
“The Lega Serie A has requested the application of five substitutions during the 2020-21 season,” explained Gravina in a press conference.
Gravina was accompanied in the press Conference by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“I can therefore say today that there will be five substitutions right from the start of the campaign.”
