Five former Springboks who recently tested positive for the Covid-19 virus have been given the all-clear. Divan Serfontein, Danie Gerber, Colin Beck, Burger Geldenhuys and Robbie Blair have all recovered.
Danie Gerber was the first to test positive for the disease after playing on a golf day for former Springboks in Jan Kempdorp in the Northern Cape, followed by the others.
The former centre’s wife Elsabe and daughter Elanie also tested positive for the disease and are said to be recovering at the Gerber’s Blue Bay family home in Port Elizabeth.
The golf day was a commemoration of the Springboks’ highly controversial 1981 tour of New Zealand in the heart of the acrimonious anti-apartheid campaigns against South Africa.
South Africa was banned from all major sporting events and the tour of New Zealand heightened global condemnation of rugby ties with the apartheid state. The Springboks won one match in the three-test series and the All Blacks won two.
