Joe Gomez could be set for a significant spell on the sidelines due to injury. The centre-back is believed to have picked up the problem while away on international duty with England.
Gomez has been keeping the Liverpool defence together in the absence of Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman is expected to sit out the 2020/21 campaign after undergoing surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament.
Now Jurgen Klopp could also be without Gomez, with Gareth Southgate expected to confirm the news later today. Multiple reports claim there are concerns Gomez’s injury could be a lay-off.
It’s another dagger blow for the Premier League champions, who have also lost Trent Alexander-Arnold for up to four weeks.
The right-back limped off in the 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Sunday and was forced to withdraw from the England squad.
Now Gomez is expected to follow suit, leaving Liverpool with just one senior centre-back in Joel Matip. The former Schalke man has had plenty of fitness concerns himself and has proved unreliable in the past year. Now he will have to step up to the plate as Liverpool eagerly await the return of Fabinho.
The Brazilian slotted in alongside Gomez at centre-back in wins over Ajax, Sheffield United and FC Midtjylland. However, he was forced off the field with a hamstring problem against the Danish side but the injury was not as bad as first feared. He could be in line to return against Leicester on November 21 alongside midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
