Ciro Immobile took a giant step towards calming the Capocannoniere gong in Italy following his stunning hat-trick in SS Lazio’s 5-1 win over Hellas Verona on Sunday. The Capocannoniere is the title awarded to the highest goal scorer of each season in Italy’s Serie A.
The title is currently held by Fabio Quagliarella, who scored 26 goals for Sampdoria in the 2018–19 season.
Immobile went into Sunday’s game on 31 goals and one clear of closest challenger, Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo but his treble has now seen him pull clear of the Portuguese superstar at the summit of the standings.
The forward’s first on the stroke of halftime was a well-struck penalty after he was fouled by Darko Larzovic. His second, an excellent lob, was completed with six minutes remaining before he rounded the scoring on an extraordinary evening at the Stadio Marco Antonio Bentegodi with another excellently-taken penalty in the fourth minute of injury time.
Immobile has now drawn level with Bayern Munich’s marksman, Robert Lewandowski in the race for Europe’s Golden Shoe as the Pole also netted 34 times for the Bavarians in the Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Joaquin Correa were the other goal scoring contributors for Bayern on Sunday night. Lazio currently sit fourth in Serie A with 75 points from 36 matches.
