Rivers United missed the chance to move to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Thursday as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Katsina United.
The Rivers United technical manager, Stanley Eguma made nine changes to the side that beat Adamawa United 1-0 in Port Harcourt on Thursday and paid the price for such large scale alterations to personnel. 
A nervous start by the visitors saw the hosts quickly take advantage at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium with two first half goals from Faisal Sani on five minutes and  Boubacar Massaly in the 19th minute.
Rivers United improved after the break and halved the deficit through a Malachi Ohawume strike with seven minutes remaining.
That was however as good as it got for the Port Harcourt side as they stayed on the coattails of the leaders, Enyimba, three points off the pace. 
Rivers United have amassed 15 points from right matches this season.
In the day’s other game, Heartland and FC Ifeanyiubah played out a 1-1 draw at the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri.
Emmanuel Adachi gave the hosts the lead on 31 minutes from the penalty spot but Chinemerem Igboeli equalised for the Anambra Warriors with four minutes remaining.
