Robert Lewandowski has spoken about his happiness after he was recognised as The Best FIFA Men’s Player in 2020.
The Pole said he had been “longing” for individual recognition following years of consistently solid performances for club and country. He scored 55 goals last season and 60 in the period considered for this honour, 20 more than Cristiano Ronaldo and 28 clear of Lionel Messi, the two men he edged out in the final shortlist.
“I hope I’ll still play for a long time,” Lewandowski said. “I feel good and am not thinking about the end of my career. I want to be at the top of the world for many years to come. The Expectations are high every year. But it’s not always easy
“No matter how many titles I’ve won, it won’t be enough. I already have the next trophies in my mind, that’s my mentality and that of the whole team. To win a title once is difficult, a second time is more difficult. I hope we can celebrate the next one with the fans.
“Messi and Ronaldo have been playing at the highest level for years and now I’m here. That means the hard work is paying off. It will be a while before I can realize. I think it’ll be difficult to sleep tonight.
“I am happy to be here now after many years of hard work. That was a sensational year. It’s always difficult to stay on top , but we want to stay on top. Thanks to everyone in the staff and to my teammates. Without them this would not have been possible. I’m so proud.”
