Enyimba’s two-goal hero, Victor Mbaoma is still in deep pains hours after his side were evicted from the 2021 Caf Champions League no thanks to the Sudanese champions, Al-Merrikh Sporting Club.
The People’s Elephant won 2-1 the second leg first round clash on Wednesday at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba but the score line fell far short of the required numbers to upturn the 0-3 deficit the Aba side incurred against the Sudanese giants in the first leg in Omdurman on December 23, 2020.
Al-Merrikh have now advanced to the lucrative group stage of Africa’s prime inter-club competition on an 4-2 aggregate.
Mbaoma admitted regrettably that his side were undone in Omdurman by the 0-3 disadvantage in their concerted efforts to progress to the next stage of the competition.
“I’m not really happy because even if I’m happy that I scored but once the whole body is down there is no part that will be fine.
“The goals did not change anything but it’s a very good thing for me that I scored even though there was really nothing to show for it that is why I felt bad.
“Yes, exactly, we lost the battle in Omdurman because the 0-3 defeat was too much, it’s a very difficult task, not easy because we need to score four unreplied goals, shockingly they scored first right here in Aba,” said the former Remo Stars goal poacher.
Mbaoma said his side are determined to make up for the Caf Champions League first round elimination by going for the title of Caf Confederation Cup.
“The Caf Confederation Cup is the reality that faces us at the moment there is nothing we can possibly do about it.
“Right now we are condemned to get the title this time around, we got close to it the last time that means we can as well achieve it.
“We have actually made up our minds to console ourselves with the Caf Confederation Cup title, we have no excuses,” said the Enyimba lanky marksman.
Enyimba’s elimination from the Caf Champions League competition automatically means a drop to the less fancied Africa’s second tier inter-club competition, Caf Confederation Cup where another Nigerian side, Rivers United are holding their heads high.
