The Secretariat of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has submitted to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) the name of Rivers Angels as the champions of the 2020/2021 NWFL Premiership season.
The submission was made after a successful Angels outing at the NWFL Premiership Super 6, held at the Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadiu in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state.
According to NWFL chairperson, Aisha Falode, the NFF General Secretary was to send a letter confirming the Rivers Angels’ win, to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) WAFU Zone B, on Monday (April 26) in order to meet a CAF deadline of April 26.
Falode also hinted on Monday that if they were successful at the zonal playoffs, Nigeria could find itself with two slots at the championships finals.
“The country that wins the zonal playoff will represent the zone at the final tournament later in the year, our league champions will play in the WAFU B playoff.
“Therefore, if Nigeria emerges as zonal champions and are given the African Women Cup of Nations’ slot as champions, Nigeria may get two slots at the final tournament.
“This is possible because CAF has reserved one additional slot given to the Zone who produced the champions at the last edition of the AWCON for women.
“The Super Falcons of Nigeria won it at Ghana 2018 and we are in WAFU ZONE B.
“The modality for deciding who takes this slot is not known yet. Ordinarily, Nigeria who won it should be given the slot. This explained the second slot for Nigeria at the Women CAF Champions League,” said Falode
Falode stated that the General Secretary of WAFU Zone B, Boureima Balima, had also disclosed that the qualifiers will be held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast from July 15 – 30, 2021, as opposed to a previously communicated May date.
